Description
I built this easel for the adventurous painter. I have struggled to find an easel that isn’t bulky with unnecessary moving parts, while at the same time being a reasonable price. This easel folds up small to fit in a typical backpack, but you’re not limited to painting small! It is lightweight but rigid. It is perfect for throwing in your suitcase or backpack before going on a hike or trip. I wanted it to stand on its own as a piece of art, but also be highly functional and simple. This is the easel and palette I’ve dreamed about; lots of mixing space, lightweight and small, capable of supporting larger canvases.

Been using it this past week. I’ve been making videos on it. I think you did an amazing job with it. Big fan of how much space the palette has and all the details you’ve done with it on making it easy to clean and use, plus it looks great. Felt a little bad getting paint on the edges. The mast is wonderful too. Need to get a better tripod, the quick release has a little play on the one i’m using. The pieces that clamp onto the canvas or panels are able to grip anything. I was a little skeptical of the screws to begin with but now I’m firmly in the camp that it’s a brilliant idea.

I’m a fan! I really like your original upcycled cigar box design, but was still having to lug around my French easel. When I saw your video about this one, I was ready to upgrade!
I’ve used this several times now for both painting and setting up my drawing board. The versatility in how many sizes and types of surfaces it holds is fantastic. Setup and break down is so fast and easy, especially with the tripod quick release installed and ready. The palette has a lot of room! I like the divided box for having paint on one side and using the other as a sort of tabletop space for brushes and supplies. The adjustability of the arms on the box is a useful detail. Same for how the palettes come out of the box. I have one side in the freezer right now. So convenient!

Bought this for my Daughter-in-Law for Christmas to replace her bulky French Easel. Really impressed with the quality of workmanship, and thoughtful design. Accommodates larger panels than my current set-up. I plan to upgrade to this for my outdoor easel as well!

I have many plein air set ups and paint Every day. The Tad Retz Easel is the lightest most compact, easiest to set up, and meets all my needs regarding space for mixing and can hold a large canvas. I have painted on it extensively and dropped it heavily with zero damage. If you pack your set up for plein air use the best materials (Belgian Linen, good brushes, finer frames) and this is the easel.
